The Mildmay Time Bank

Everyone in a community has skills, knowledge and talents. A Time Bank is a way of bringing people together so that they can share them to help each other and get things done. The idea works too! There are now seven time banks in Islington and over a hundred round the country.

The idea is simple. We believe everyone has useful skills and knowledge and we count everyone's time as equally important. Anybody can join a time bank and people put in as much or as little time as they wish. An hour of your know-how earns you an hour in the bank to spend on what you don't-know-how, in the form of help or support from the other members training. People may also donate credits to other members of their family or someone else they think needs some help.

Apart from one to one exchanges, there is now a time bank plot at King Henry's Walk Garden where participants are learning to grow (and eat!) their own organic food and the time bank has paid half the cost of installing a Micro Food Farm. A MFF is a great resource for training people who do not have a garden or vegetable plot but want to grow food in containers at home. "Find your Focus" training is also given people the ideas and tools to sort out their own lives or work out how to create and run successful projects themselves.

And we have fun too!
